Mainstream Nature-based Education through
Primary Science and Humanities Teaching and Learning

Leverage the two new subjects Science and Humanities, embed nature-based education in primary school education by:

  • Build curriculum of primary Science and Humanities subjects with local environment and biodiversity as themes, and to use neighbouring natural areas as venues.
  • Empower teachers to adopt nature-based education as the core strategy for formal subject through training, demonstration and support in implementation.
  • Increase nature-based learning opportunities for students.

The project will work on three key areas

1. Curriculum and Lesson Plan Development

Develop a curriculum and teaching package that includes indoor classes and district-based outdoor learning sessions for Primary 4 Science and Humanities. The curriculum will utilize neighboring natural areas and urban green spaces to support the teaching and learning of formal subjects.

2. Teacher Training

To familiarise teachers with the newly developed curriculum and teaching package, the training sessions will introduce the teaching materials and share insights on lesson design. The training will focus on outdoor learning and pedagogical skills for nature-based education, with the goal of strengthening teachers’ professional competence and confidence in outdoor teaching. By addressing the challenges faced in planning and delivering lessons outdoors, the training seeks to empower teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver and implement the curriculum and teaching package in schools.

  • District-based, the demonstration of lesson plans will be conducted in urban parks and countryside within the schools’ district
  • Free of charge, all participating teachers will receive a certificate of attendance for applying for CPD hours
  • Participating schools will receive a full set of the teaching package in soft copy for free

During implementation, Partner Schools will receive extensive professional support in addition to the initial teacher training, including: teacher demonstrations, pedagogical consultancy, transportation subsidies, and hard copies of the Teacher’s Book and Student Workbook.

With the support from Swire Group Charitable Trust and The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Hong Kong, invited schools can join as Partner Schools at a subsidized rate of HK$2,500.
